Athelney for English nationalism The English are members of a community which has a recorded history nearly 2000 years old. The English share a history, ancestry, language and way-of-life. Like any other nation they share a communal identity - a sense of belonging. A nation is the most extended of extended families. The English gave their name to England. A person does not become English merely by living in England, and an English person does not cease to be English when they live somewhere other than England.
